How To Choose a Rug For The Nursery

By Soraia Martins August 27, 2021, 9:13 am

A rug is a great way to add color, texture, and character to your baby’s nursery, but certain factors go into choosing the perfect rug for such a special room in your home.

Decorating a nursery is a lovely experience that involves a lot of thinking and consideration. From the crib and the changing table to finding storage space, there are a handful of essentials that you need in a nursery.

But what about the rug? Read on to find out how to choose a rug for the nursery.

Pick The Size

There are no set rules for what size a nursery rug should be, but there are a few pointers that will help you decide. Depending on the size of the nursery, you should pick a rug that either anchors your major furniture pieces, such as the crib and the dresser or sit independently of them.

If you have hardwood floors, for example, choose a big rug and ensure that the front legs of your crib overlap the edges by a few inches. This option will bring more comfort to the room, as well as allow you to walk into the nursery in the middle of the night without making any noise.

A smaller rug can be used to highlight a specific area or draw focus to a single item, such as the crib, which is usually the central piece in a nursery. It can also be just a small addition to the nursery to complete the overall design.

Select The Material

Rugs come in so many materials nowadays it can become quite overwhelming to choose one for your nursery. Start by going through your priorities and see what kind of material fits better in what you are looking for.

You can always go with sisal or jute for natural materials, though they are not usually the comfiest to walk on. Cotton is also a great bet since it is soft, easy to maintain, and clean if the rug is flat-woven and contains no synthetic fibers.

Wool rugs, particularly organic wool, are a fantastic option for the nursery, too. Wool is easy to clean, naturally flame-resistant, water-repellent, and depending on the brand, it can even have antibacterial properties.

Decide On a Pattern

There is really no limit to what a rug can bring to a nursery when it comes to pattern and design. Whether you are creating a gender-neutral nursery or thinking ahead and planning for a nursery that can be seamlessly turned into a kids’ room, there are endless options of patterns to choose from.

If you are working with many solid textures and neutral hues, try breaking them up with a bold or geometric patterned rug. On the other hand, if all you see is color everywhere, opt for a more simplified and smooth pattern.

Invest In Shapes

If your nursery already sports wall-to-wall carpeting, you can still choose a rug and place it over the carpet to create some negative space and add a bit of character to the room. You can also opt for a smaller carpet in a shape other than the usual rectangle and give the nursery a fun atmosphere.

Choosing a rug for the nursery comes down to style and the best material that is durable and resistant to stains while making the room cozier. Take our suggestions into account when choosing a rug for the nursery and pair it up with some research of your own, as different brands offer different features, sizes, and materials.
